Devils Tower

Day four we started off in Rapid City South Dakota drove all they through Dakota and into Wyoming. We stopped for a fun break at Devil's Tower. The kids did their packets and became Junior Rangers. We learned that Devil's Tower was the very first National Monument. Yellowstone was the very first National Park. We also learned that "Devil's Tower" was not the original name for this monument. American Indians named the towering rock Grizzly Bear's Lodge, but the Translation was done incorrectly. The Indian word for the Tower should have been translated into "Bear Lodge and not into Bad God's Tower. From Bad God's Tower the name we know Today as Devils Tower. They are trying to change the name to the original name but now that it's a monument it requires legislation and congressional action. It just goes to show you what happens when things are translated incorrectly. Here is a great picture of Devil's Tower
